My turn....

I couldn't let David stand on his soapbox alone!

In my humble opinion, Foxboro (and most of the other DCS manufacturers)
has miserably failed to produce the marketed results of the Microsoft craze.

Many, many years ago we were inundated with wonderful presentations showing
us the future of IA's openness and interoperability we would receive if
"only" we
would move from UNIX to Windows. So far, the only thing that has come from
this is the worries of virus attacks and a decent non-redundant OPC I/O
Gateway. You can take your own chances by installing third party software
on
the your Windows boxes, but don't call TAC for support or they will tell you
to
take it off and call them back. Yes, if you are buying a new system and
don't
care about only working on one control database at a time, then the system
is
okay. But, the "as promised" system from many years ago is still many years
away. I still think the 70 series is for small, one-node systems. At least
that
is the only way I would use it. I have replaced some of my WP51's with XP
boxes, but they have other WP's nearby when we have to "work" on them.

You can use Ghost to backup Windows boxes, but make sure you use the
Enterprise version. This is not supported "officially" by Foxboro either,
even
though their service people use it.

As far as reliability goes, if you install the Windows system and never add
any questionable software, it seems to run pretty stable. But it's not a
matter
of IF it is going to need a reboot only a matter of WHEN. With UNIX, this
was never a problem for me.

But the point I/we are trying to make is that Foxboro has promised the sun
and moon without delivering anything useful to existing large IA users.
