We have had similar issues - and replacing one of the disks worked for us.
The problem highlights how RAID gives a totally false sense of reliability
- the computer does not know which disk is actually faulting for many of
the failure modes. After some research i found this to be more common than
i had realised, until you get to (from memory) RAID 4 a single disk failure
can have this effect.
On a plus side - replacing the drive was as easy as it should be, and done
online with no issues.
