The EW is getting a message on bootup "letterbug: bad address", but the
letterbug referenced does not match the letterbug on the nodebus module. The
nodebus module associated with the EW's letterbug is showing Red/Green.
I'm curious if we cycle the power on the nodebus module by lowering the
elevator and pull/push it and raising the elevator and rebooting the EW would
cause any problems with the system. Currently the CPs are up and running and I
do not want to cause an issue with the power on the CPs and end up losing
control.
We don't have boots on the ground yet and we are supporting remotely.
Thanks,
Dave

Not sure I'm answering your question but AW's should boot completely and into
FoxView weather connected to nodebus or not. If the other stations are WP's
they need typically need to see the nodebus card but don't really need the
whole nodebus to boot completely. Also, our stations boot to Initial Display,
if these stations boot to process displays with no nodebus connection may take
a while. Not dealt with D boxes, but 2nd head video cards and 2nd NIC cards
can also cause boot problems with SPARC boxes. Agree with your boot
instructions, we usually just use -y but we keep hot spare drives for
everything.

Brian,
The customer ran the printenv and diag-switch? was set to default False so no
action was required.
I have not had the customer run the file system check yet as I do not want to
start deleting files without knowledgeable boots on the ground.
I would recommend that they do run the fsck -n option to identify a list of
potentially bad or corrupt system files.
For this would they follow the directions below:
STOP A
OK: boot-s
#: fsck -n
STOP A
OK: boot-r
What is concerning is that the workstation boots to the main screen, but I/A
FoxView does not come up, nor will it load when chosen from the Programs menu.
There are two other operator workstations on the Nodebus and both of those were
hung up this morning and after reboot were just black screens.
I do not think the two things are linked, but could a bad Nodebus be causing
the FoxView issue as well as the boot issues on the two operator worksations?
I would expect these three boxes to at least boot independent of the Nodebus.
Thanks,
Dave

STOP A, gets to ok prompt
At ok, boot -s (boots to single user)
If lucky and boots to # prompt, do at least 3 fsck -y
When done, STOP A
At ok, boot -r

Printenv and setenv are used from the ok prompt, board level, Solaris. Usually
turn box on, use the STOP key and letter A at the same time to get to ok prompt.
Just do a web search for Solaris printenv and you'll find a bunch of stuff.

Subject: [foxboro] AW51D Boot Problem and NVRAM Suspected Failure
Hello,
I'm supporting a customer who has a suspected NVRAM failure on their AW51D
running I/A v6.1
The engineering workstation when booted will display the Nodebus icon on the
screen, but when the customer tries to open I/A FoxView under programs nothing
happens.
I found old threads in freelist pertaining to using CTRL+C and entering the
printenv command at the OK prompt, but the customer and I are not familiar
enough with the function of the AW51Ds and their boot sequence to know when to
use these steps.
I had the customer use CTRL+C when the engineering workstation was booting
which resulted in a message that it was in single User mode and prompted him to
use CTRL+D to boot to normal mode or enter the password to enter maintenance
mode. He does not know the maintenance password and I cannot recall if it is a
default one.
At one point, he was asked to select a boot level 0-6, but we were not sure of
what those options were.
Should the CTRL+C be entered during the boot up or after the boot has completed
and he is on the main screen, but his I/A FoxView isn't up, any recommendations
on how we proceed?
On the subject of checking the printenv through a command, when and how do we
do this? He has not seen any available command prompt during boot and does not
have access to a VT100 window in I/A.
Thank you for the support.
