To the best of my knowledge, no. My wife streams a lot of Korean programs and
some of these are singing contests, somewhat akin to Americas Got Talent, The
Voice, etc. I never watch these so I'm making a rough comparison.
She was watching one of these program and chuckling because one of the judges,
a very popular long time singer, was making his assessment of one the
contestants and people were looking at him funny because they were not
understanding all of what he was saying. Now Oki, being from that same state
as the judge, knew exactly what he was saying and wondered out-loud why he was
using so much "South Jeolla" language (dialect) on a nationally broadcast
network program.
South Jeolla is the southern most state on the west side of the peninsula and
has a distinct dialect. Hundreds of years ago it was even a separate
country(kingdom) and developed it's own culture and dialect, and that still has
a minor impact. Through years of wars and conflict it eventually became part
of the Joseon Empire on the way to being the Korean Empire, which lasted until
the Japanese occupied the country from 1910 until their defeat in 1945.
Historical dramas are very popular in South Korea and most seem to take place
during the Joseon Era, and the dialect used in the dramas is "South Jeolla".
The reason I'm told is because "South Jeolla" most closely resembles the Joseon
dialect. Oki tells me that people actually study, or take "lessons", to learn
to speak the "South Jeolla" dialect. Ironically, I just read that English
words make up more that 10% of the Korean language now.
That's my first hand impression of the status of dialects in the country. I
don't speak any Korean but the accent of those that come from the southeast
port city of Busan is so distinct that even I can detect it when I hear it.
So these are my reason in a nutshell 😅(I know - TMI) why I feel that local
dialects are not fading in Korea.

mainly, I would guess, as a result of TV and more travel and tourism. Sicily
has kept its dialect for sure, but has always been considered separate. If
you're from Sicily, you're not Italian... you're Sicilian.

Very much so. Each region has a distinct accent and dialect, just like we do
here. And just like here, most people can tell where another person comes from
by the accent and dialect.
Well, most people anyway. When we go back people can never figure out where
Oki comes from. She grew up on a small rural farm in one of the southern most
parts of the country, but went off to high school in the second largest city of
the country, in the southwest corner and learned their way of speaking. Add in
nearly 50 years of speaking English daily, eroding her Korean skills, her
speech often baffles folks. She also has the ability to change her accent to
match the region she is in further confusing folk. We often get a good laugh
when people say to her how great her Korean is for a foreigner. They are
always surprised to learn she is actually from Korea.

Sounds like it will be a long wait for a vaccine for our age group
everywhere. According to our state “Crush Covid”, website this week medical
staff, hospital workers, first responders, prisoners & staff, clinic staff,

75 and up is the next group. CVS & Walgreens are gearing up to do more than
just nursing homes so I hope that means they’ll do an appointment system like
they are doing for testing & have done for flu shots.
My cousin’s wife in NE has been in ICU on a vent for 5 weeks with Covid. Good
news she came off the ventilator yesterday! She had a tracheotomy & has a
long way to go, but good news. The virus attacked her bowel & has an
illeostomy. Poor thing. She’s 71.
