Steve, I wonder if local dialects are fading there? They are in much of Italy,
mainly, I would guess, as a result of TV and more travel and tourism. Sicily
has kept its dialect for sure, but has always been considered separate. If
you're from Sicily, you're not Italian... you're Sicilian. DonnaSent from my

Accents like the southerners?
Very much so. Each region has a distinct accent and dialect,
just like we do here. And just like here, most people can tell
where another person comes from by the accent and dialect.
Well, most people anyway. When we go back people can never
figure out where Oki comes from. She grew up on a small rural
farm in one of the southern most parts of the country, but went
off to high school in the second largest city of the country, in
the southwest corner and learned their way of speaking. Add in
nearly 50 years of speaking English daily, eroding her Korean
skills, her speech often baffles folks. She also has the ability
to change her accent to match the region she is in further
confusing folk. We often get a good laugh when people say to her
how great her Korean is for a foreigner. They are always
surprised to learn she is actually from Korea.
More than you wanted to know so I'll stop here.
Stay safe, Steve

This made me chuckle because the southerners on the
Korean peninsula (South Koreans) do not even have a
word for "cousin". Cousins are the same as brothers
and sisters in their culture. Guess they really are
southerners .

I have read that it has become sort of an
"accepted" definition to be second cousins since so
many people worded it like that - but technically she
was my first cousin once removed. In other words, her
dad and I were first cousins but then she was one more
generation "removed" from me. She and my sons would
technically be second cousins since they are the same
generation - twice removed from grandparents'
generation (I think).

Thank you Karen,
I’m sorry to hear about your cousin (can’t figure
out how that works 2nd cousin?) I just
hope that this vaccine program gets more efficient
so we can look forward to living again! Jane

Jane, I'm sorry
for what your cousin's wife has had to go through
- and
will continue to -
but good news that she is progressing. I just
lost
a relative to
COVID at age 61 - her dad was my first cousin.
Scary
scary thing...
