I got my first shot Thursday in Texas - again by word of mouth. Someone I

was opening up a couple places for those over 65. I had tried the Houston
distribution center whose number was on TV and they said they had no spots
through the end January. I’d also tried Walgreens, CVS, Kroger and H-E-B that
supposedly had shots. No luck. So, while I was dummy I tried the Harris
county website and snagged an appointment two days later. Three of us got
appointments that way. The fourth wasn’t sure of her schedule so she decided
to check the next day and she is out of luck. The January appointments are
all gone and they haven’t opened up February yet.
I got the Moderna vaccine. Sore arm but that is all. I have an appointment
for the second shot - date and time but no location.
Seems like a cockamamie way to roll out a vaccine.

Hi Everyone,
My wife Barbara and I were given our covid-19 shots this morning. Somehow
Safeway received a batch.
How were we informed? Well, a lady in Barbara's book club heard about the
opportunity from her ex-husband. That lady started notifying people in the
book club. Many of the people in the book club and ladies bridge group are
retired teachers who Barbara knew when she was teaching. One lady from the
bridge group notified Barbara and fifty others (she is very active in her
church and other senior type groups). We started monitoring the Safeway
medical dashboard and all of a sudden, many appointments were available.
We then notified some people in our mineral club who signed up and
notified others.
When we showed up for our shot, we were asked how we knew about the shot
being available ( was it suppose to be a secret?). She asked if we saw it
on their website or received word from the county health department. We
don't normally frequent Safeway's website and had not thought of checking
the county health departments website.
So, is the distribution of the vaccine and our chance of signing up an act
of randomness or an act of chaos? Perhaps networking is an additional
layer on top of those two factors. Certainly an orderly plan of
distribution does not come to mind.
We were so excited about the prospect of being vaccinated that we showed
up at Safeway a day early ( and were not the only ones to do so)! But,
hell we can't tell one day from another at our age! We get up in the
morning and 26 wild turkeys are standing outside staring in our windows,
waiting to be fed. We feed them, have breakfast, walk the community roads
with our neighbors for exercise and social life. Then we retreat to our
hobbies.
Good luck in getting your vaccine,
Bob
