not able to configure outlook as exchange client

hi all,
 iam not able to configure outlook as an exchange client , but iam able to
do it by using pop3,imap etc. is it necessary that the client which should
be configured as an exchangeclient should be the part of domain ???

anyone pls kindly help me out
