I refer to loss of Single Instance Storage. A restore from Exmerge could well find you with a database that is twice the size if the original one. Ntbackup is not a good way to backup Exchange and the Open File agent will almost certainly corrupt the database. Partially committed transaction logs is the main reason and them being out of Sync with Information store(s). Finally Exmerge cannot be scheduled. Deleted Item retention etc is fine but what happens when someone comes back in three months time and says I deleted a message and I need it back. I have had this problem many times and the server that the message(s) was\were originally on had been physically removed long since. Hope that helps. Regards, Paul Lemonidis. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mark Fugatt" <mark@xxxxxxxxx> To: "[ExchangeList]" <exchangelist@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, June 19, 2003 7:49 AM Subject: [exchangelist] RE: Backing up exchange http://www.MSExchange.org/ You are correct the Windows 2000 backup program does not support individual mailbox backup/restore, but then again why would you want to do that?, if you implement deleted item retention and mail retention you don't really need to perform mailbox restores, if you really want to then look at Exmerge as a way of backing up individual mailboxes. This group is probably one of the best lists there is, we all have a good relationship with each other, and I have even had people from this list travel to training centers to attend Exchange classes that I deliver, another great source of information are the public Microsoft newsgroups: http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/community/newsgroups/default.asp Mark Fugatt MCT, MCSE, Microsoft Exchange MVP Pentech Office Solutions Inc Tel: 585 586 3890 Cell: 585 576 4750 Fax: 585 249 0316 www.4mcts.com www.exchangetrainer.com -----Original Message----- From: mark [mailto:mark@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Wednesday, June 18, 2003 11:31 PM To: [ExchangeList] http://www.MSExchange.org/ I don't want to drag this issue out more than we have to but NTBACKUP doesn't support backup/restore of individual mailboxes/email. BTW, you guys are awesome...what ever did we do before message boards? -----Original Message----- From: Mark Fugatt [mailto:mark@xxxxxxxxx] Sent: Thursday, June 19, 2003 1:06 AM To: [ExchangeList] Subject: [exchangelist] RE: Backing up exchange http://www.MSExchange.org/ <snipped> I think so too :-) Mark Fugatt MCT, MCSE, Microsoft Exchange MVP Pentech Office Solutions Inc Tel: 585 586 3890 Cell: 585 576 4750 Fax: 585 249 0316 www.4mcts.com www.exchangetrainer.com -----Original Message----- From: Kenny Mann [mailto:Kennymann@xxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Wednesday, June 18, 2003 6:14 PM To: [ExchangeList] http://www.MSExchange.org/ It has a method of using ntbackup to backup your exchange server.
