Grades did however rise in mathematics and science, said the head of the Education Ministry's evaluation department, Gili Shield on Tuesday. When tested in math, eighth graders from Jewish schools scored 16 percent higher than they did in 2003. However, the rate of English students who made a passing grade according to the ministry's standards (a grade of 56 or higher) has dropped seven percent since last year's tests. Arab schools scored even lower than Jewish ones, with a 12 percent decrease in passing English grades since 2003.
