A few years back my thermostat stuck in tne open position and the engine would never reach a good operating temperature (and the heater and defrost were luke warm). I sprang for the extra cost of a robertshaw thermostat and did the stove top test when it got here. Based on the thermometer I was using (candy) it opened right when it was supposed to. I then installed it and immediately could see the difference; engine heated up and the heater and defrost were toasty. The last part is important because as some of you may know I don't live in a really warm climate. I cannot verify it but I think the mileage went up, too, because the engine was getting up to a better operating temperature. This is a brand-new, unused 180F thermostat from Otter Zone. Here it's closed at just under 200F: And here, it's wide open at just OVER 200F: It sure seems like a 195 thermostat to me, but it's marked 180. I dunno. r
