I'm with you all the way on that, Elaine. I really can't take "Mansfield Park" at any price, (Oops! No pun was intended, but that was rather good!) Fanny is so utterly wet! I'm not surprised her cousins didn't bother with her. My favourite Austen is "Emma", mainly because the main character is so flawed, but at the same time so likeable. I also liked the misunderstandings and little intrigues in the story, and the similarity in character between Emma's sister and her father.

I love three out of the six Jane Austen novels but am not truly inspired by either "Mansfield Park" or "Northanger Abbey"; can manage "Sense and Sensibility". I don't think many ofus liked it then. However, I have now read most of Jane Austen and really enjoyed some of them. I don't know why kids get Austen to study at school particularly as most of them no longer study the relevant period of history. It reallydoeshelp to know something about the manners and circumstances of the timesas there is quite a lot of satire in some of them. Hi Elaine, I've never been able to get on with Jane Austin and hated Pride andPrejudice when we had extracts read to us at school. I expect you rememberthat Steve - I think you were there weren't you? I am very happy to have my mind changed about Rochester and am looking forward to the Jean Rhys. Best wishes, Voldi At 09:02 05/06/2013, you wrote:Take heart, Voldi, Rochester can grow on you if you let him; or did me. In truth, he has a lot to be cantankerous about - though perhaps you will feel otherwise once you sail the Sargasso! Ultimately, his sacrifice exceeds that of Jane Austen's Mr. Darcy, butthen it would have to since Charlotte Bronte did not like "Pride and Prej".I have been with you in spirit in the 19th century; re-reading favourite passages of Austen and Dickens.
