If you do not get the kind of help you think is necessary, I possibly could
help. I'm taking the Braille Formats course from the National Braille
Association. The course is a self-study course. It is rather long and
demanding. I wonder if George's question was because some inmates are
transferred before they begin to make good progress on lengthy courses. I
have been taking the course since April. I have been through it twice and am
going through the fourth time. I am aiming to be halfway ready by next
spring. So, I am not an expert but picking up more each repetition through
the materials and exercises.

I applaud a person aiming so high.

By the way, I am a braille reader but most likely answer questions
concerning the print material.

Pass my congratulations on to the inmate for aiming high. The formatting
course is coveted.

My appreciation goes to you for tackling such a difficult job.

On this note, does anyone know of a correspondence course for Formats? I
supervise a prison Braille program and the course is difficult enough as it
is without contact to the outside. It would be much easier for them as a
course with someone to get feedback from rather than just reading and taking
a test. Thanks.

Hi Cathy,

The Hadley School for the Blind offers many online courses and many are
FREEJ including Introduction to Braille and Contracted Braille. I took both
of these courses and they were great!

Hey all,

I?m writing from the deep south?Chile in fact. My husband is blind and is
director of an agency for aide to the disabled here as well as a church
planter. He used to do all the brailing, but things have gotten too busy so
I have been learning to handle some of it for him.

Is there anywhere I can go on line for some training? I try to read the
help files, but there are so many terms I don?t understand and I need some
very basic introductory stuff. I have been able to do what I have
to?basically transcribing a Bible study book and inserting descriptions of
charts, drawings etc. We have also made tactile maps from sandpaper and
other textures so the blind can actually understand the area we?re studying.
(For many this is the first time they?ve ever looked at a map.)

I will also be training sighted volunteers to use the program to be able to
share the load. I know the program can do SO much more than we use it for,
and that we are probably doing everything the ?hard way?. Any help would be
appreciated.
