Hi Pauline,

It might be worth contacting Enabling Technologies in this instance. I'm not
quite sure if and how they could space the dots to create a larger braille cell.

Good Morning,

I am referring to the size of dots when embossed. We have numerous students
with hand issues who may need to start out with large dot Braille. Some will
progress to the standard Braille as their fingers get more sensitized. We have
an Enabling Phoenix embosser with the Firebird Graphics software if this
information is helpful.

Hi Pauline,

Excellent!

My first suggestion is to continue in Word for now and make use of some special
features.

First would be to look at DBT's Global: Word Importer. There are two specific
things I suggest you check.

[Screen shot of part of DBT's Global: Word Importer.]

The first allows you to use and display the Braille and SimBraille fonts in
Word where you require, and have those completely unchanged when opened in DBT.
Hence for example, the word "braille" would not be contracted to "brl"

The second option is a little more technical, but valuable nevertheless. The
example in the menu shows [[*pg*]], and if you type this in word as show, it
will result in a page break when opened in DBT.

I usually create a "Character Style" in Word, in which I use a red coloured
font and additionally make it a "Hidden" font. The net result is that you only
then see these codes if you click on Word's Show/Hide icon. If you do wish the
Codes to be ink printed, this can be done in Word's Print.

Here in the UK, we are a little ahead of the next thing which is to make use of
DBT's Document: Learning Tables. The TSBVI's learning course has only just
been updated for UEB, but will appear in the next DBT release. I suggest you
might like to study this section in DBT's Help, if only for future use.

Potentially this could mean that large passages could be translated at an
appropriate level in DBT, and then the braille copied from DBT to Word. You
then apply the one of the braille fonts as above to that text in Word, and it
will remain as displayed when imported back.

As regards size of the braille, do you mean on screen or to printer, or from
the embosser? For the former, 22-24 point is approximately the same size as
tactile braille, but as regards the latter, this depends on what make and model
of embosser you have. Some can, some can't.

Can I leave you with this for now while you try it out?

George

Good Morning,

I had been attempting to create the materials in Word and importing them. I
would be willing to create them in DBT if that makes more sense. Tell me how
to do this?

I am teaching UEB where applicable. I am not that proficient in the new code
myself, so it has been interesting trying to learn and teach at the same time.
I look forward to any tips for creating assignments.

P.S. While I'm sending this message, it has been mentioned that somewhere in
DBT is a place where you can set things so that the Braille dots can be be a
bit wider. If this is so, where is that option(s)?

Hi Pauline,

Are you creating these worksheets directly in DBT or are you entering in Word,
and then importing?

And are you now teaching Unified English Braille?

I can then be able to be more specific in answering.

Good Afternoon,

I am attempting to create practice reading assignments for my adult and young
adult Braille students. For example, I want to write up a page dealing with
the capital sign and the period. When the signs are introduced, the character
is preceded by a full cell so that the student knows that the dot(s) begin in
the lower part of the cell. How do you represent this so that it embosses
correctly? Any otherr tips for creating worksheets would be helpful.
