I tend to put the youngster on the left, and just stay out of traffic until I know what he thinks of the whole idea. I like my kneecaps where they are, thank you very much, and they are farther from harms way NOT directly behind a greenie. Also, if one should need to touch the youngster with the whip, they are already under it on the nearside. Not that we all shouldn't be proficient in using the whip on either horse, but immediacy is some times facilitated by location.
