I applied the patch as is for now. I'm not sure I'm happy with it
though. It adds a lot of logic to the renderer that ideally should
happen earlier.
We're also missing test cases for the new functionality now.
I like the syntax introduced by this patch, but it probably could be
improved and should at least have proper test cases.
So. If anyone feels strongly about rowspans: please adopt the code and
send some patches. Otherwise I will probably revert the patch on code
freeze in November.
