[dokuwiki] Can a namespace have meta data?

I'd like to have more human readable names for namespaces in the
index. I figured out how to use other metadata for individual pages,
but wondering if the same can be done for just a namespace?
The only thing I can think of is creating a page with the same name as
the namespace and store metadata with it. Then in the index pull the
information out of that page to display for the link.
Is there an easier way?
