What do you mean, it won't record the MIDI. I don't completely
understand what this particular Dxi does, but if you assign this in the
synth rack, shouldn't you get one audio and one MIDI track on which you
can record a performance?

You need DirectiXer to make it work properly. It will work (read: play)
with
Cakewalk's VST wrapper, but you won't be able to record the midi --- for
that you need a feature only DirectiXer has - midi loopback. Attached is
a WMV tutorial that was made by someone that explains how to use
it. I can't remember where I found this on the web, but I saved a copy.
The
recording was done at a small size and if you enlarge it to 200% it is
very
fuzzy. But you will understand how to use Groove Agent and Sonar 3.
DirectiXer is much better anyway and I have uninstalled the Cakewalk VST
wrapper and now only use DirectiXer - much better support as well!
