Hi, I'll take: University Budgets should not be cut. Thanks, Marie -----Original Message----- From: Alex Helling <alex@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: debatewiserrt@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Tue, 2 Feb 2010 20:34 Subject: [Debatewise RRT] Debates Evening everyone, Lateness of the debates is due to me being at home – so there was a break for dinner before I finished! I would be interested to know if you have any preferences for what type of debate you would like to have put on the site for everyone to add to and what you would like as the debates that are sent out, it would be best if I put up the ones that are most likely to have people wanting to contribute a little to but not write the whole debate. I realise that I have forgotten to add up who is debater of the month - it being the 2nd of the month it is about time I did it. I will work it out tomorrow morning and send it out. Alex Debates for you to take up: University budgets should not be cut. Politicians argue that our economy needs to move to being more of a ‘knowledge economy’ as manufacturing and other jobs are outsourced to cheaper countries overseas. However in order to produce this knowledge economy a good further education sector is needed, if our knowledge base is to grow, our universities must grow to provide the people with the relevant skills. Cutting university budgets is therefore being used to reduce the deficit now, but will in turn cost the economy in the future. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/education/article7011594.ece http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/8491729.stm Has Israel sufficiently punished the officers responsible for the use of white phosphorus? Israel has finally admitted to some wrongdoing in its reprimand for two of the officers in charge of the campaign in January 2009 against Hamas in Gaza. After an internal investigation in response to the Goldstone report, that said both sides may have committed war crimes, Israel has concluded that the white phosphorus munitions were used in accordance with international law. These slight punishments are unlikely to persuade those who want war crimes tribunals to relent. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/middle_east/article7010851.ece http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/01/world/middleeast/02mideast.html Book publishers should prevent E readers from undercutting their books recommended retail price. Macmillan has won a battle with Amazon, creator of the kindle, on the pricing of its books online. The intent is to try to prevent readers from buying their books online and instead purtchace traditional style books. However the lessons of the music industry would seem to imply that in order to prevent pirating electronic content needs to be priced as competitively as possible. Are publishers making the same mistake as the music industry in battling paid online versions of their content? http://biztech.caledonianmercury.com/2010/02/02/are-book-publishers-trying-to-kill-e-readers/ http://www.mediabistro.com/galleycat/publishing/the_ipad_to_ruin_the_book_publishing_industry_150667.asp http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/technology/arrival-of-ipad-gives-publisher-clout-in-e-book-pricing/article1452775/ Murray will get his grand slam. Although he lost in the final of the Australian Open Andy Murray seems to go from strength to strength and seems likely to end Britain’s drought of grand slams at some point in his career. However we in Britain do seem to keep getting our hopes up over tennis only to have them disappointed, while Federer is significantly older than Murray and will someday leave room at the top Nadal is of a similar age so may deny Murray his dreams of a grand slam. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/tennis/article7011453.ece http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/more-sport/2010/02/02/murray-i-fear-being-in-fed-s-shadow-for-years-115875-22012401/ Euthanasia tribunals; a good idea? Terry Pratchett, author of numerous fantasy novels and himself a sufferer of Alzheimer’s outlined in his Richard Dimbleby lecture that he would like to see Euthanasia tribunals for cases of ‘assisted death’. This would mean that it is not soley up to the ‘applicant’ and immediate relatives but instead the tribunal could collect all the facts and evidence before giving a recommendation. This would reduce the risks of people feeling compelled to die and protect their rights. http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2010/feb/02/terry-pratchett-assisted-suicide-tribunal http://www.heraldscotland.com/life-style/real-lives/alive-to-the-dangers-of-legislation-1.1003079 http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/michaeldeacon/100024694/sir-terry-pratchett-is-right-lets-legalise-assisted-death/ Debates on Debatewise (http://debatewise.org/categories/rrt as usual): Does John Terry deserve to remain as England Captain? http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2010/jan/31/john-terry-fabio-capello-england-captaincy http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/world-cup-2010/teams/england/7106154/Embarrassing-John-Terry-must-give-up-England-captaincy.html http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8492488.stm The US is right to revert to a more hard line stance on Iran? http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/feb/02/iran-dismisses-us-missile-shield http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jan/31/iran-nuclear-us-missiles-gulf http://www.huffingtonpost.com/leon-t-hadar/multi-thinking-about-iran_b_446052.html Religious freedom should come before equality. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/feb/01/pope-condemns-british-equality-bill http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/belief/2010/feb/01/pope-benedict-equality-legislation http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/telegraph-view/7131035/The-Pope-Labour-and-religious-freedom.html The US should not cut back its space program. http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2010/feb/01/us-space-mission-cuts-mars http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/barackobama/7139644/Nasa-forced-to-hire-private-space-taxis-by-White-House.html http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/02/AR2010020201775.html The Royal Navy should be reduced to being a defence force. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article7011651.ece http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article7011329.ece http://www.henryjacksonsociety.org/stories.asp?id=279 Use Revisewise @ http://revisewise.debatewise.com/
