SUSTAINING THE HUMANITIES THROUGH THE AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN (SHARP)
HumanitiesDC is now accepting applications for the Sustaining the
Humanities through the American Rescue Plan (SHARP) grant program. SHARP
funding will support humanities-based organizations and programs that have
suffered significant economic losses due to COVID.

These grants provide general operating support to non-profit cultural
organizations, working in the public humanities field, that are facing
immediate economic challenges related to the coronavirus pandemic.
Priorities for awarding the funds will be:

   - helping organizations continue their existing or planned public
humanities programs by retaining staff and maintaining their financial
   obligations
   - special projects that increase an organization’s ability to provide
equitable access to its public humanities programs and products during this
   difficult period.

For more information about SHARP funding, please contact Anaia Peddie
<apeddie@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>.

Friday, September 10 (Rain Date: Sunday, September 12)
5:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M.

A century ago, an African American woman named Hattie Sewell ran the
teahouse at Peirce Mill in Rock Creek Park. One hundred years later, the
Friends of Peirce Mill have partnered with the National Park Service and
Howard University to tell Hattie Sewell’s story.

A 30-minute documentary, Hattie Sewell, will be shown continuously at
Peirce Mill on Friday, September 10, between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.
Sunday, September 12 is the rain date.

The Capital Chicken and Waffles truck will be nearby selling food. Chicken
and waffles were Hattie Sewell’s specialty!

“Humanities Grant Program,” an initiative funded by the DC Commission on

This outdoor, socially-distant film screening is free, and no reservations

MAKING A WAY FORWARD THROUGH OUR PAST
Making a Way Forward through Our Past: Restorative Community History
Projects
Tuesday, September 14
6:00 P.M. - 7:30 P.M.

The humanities not only document and uncover the past, they can help
address past wrongs. This discussion brings together two DC projects that
do just that. Black Land Loss in Washington engages UDC students in
bringing more attention to the story of the city forcing George Pointer’s
family from their land in Chevy Chase, DC, to make way for the historically
white Lafayette Elementary School and Lafayette Park. As part of this
process, students interviewed descendants and facilitated a conversation
about how they would like the city and neighborhood to address this past.
Project Harmony Cemetery confronts the removal and discarding of one of
DC’s first cemeteries for free Blacks to make way for development,
including the Rhode Island Metro Station. This project recovers headstones
from the banks of the Potomac River in Virginia, restores them, reunites
them with the appropriate remains in Maryland, and supports the community
of descendants working toward reparative justice and education about this
history.

This program is free; registration is required. Registration ends at 5pm on
September 13, 2021.

11:00 A.M. - 12:30 P.M.

September’s Coffee Chat will feature Bob Yule, who directed the project
From Pandemic to Protest: Black Bartenders in DC.

Shaw Mainstreets and Long Story Short Media applied for a grant in 2020
grant to document and record oral history interviews with contemporary and
former Black bartenders who had worked at bars and restaurants in Shaw .
They aimed to learn how the community has changed and evolved over the
years – especially coinciding with the more recent cocktail and restaurant
renaissance. In March 2020, they found out their proposal was funded – and
then the world changed.

Join us as Yule and a panel of project collaborators and interviewees
discuss the topics and themes that emerged from the oral histories!
