HUMANITINI:
Afro Modernity in the Chocolate City: Go-Go's Diasporic Roots
Afro Modernity in the Chocolate City: Go-Go's Diasporic Roots
Friday, September 23
6:00 - 7:30 P.M.

Go-Go, a genre of music specific to Washington, D.C., has cultural roots in
West Africa and South America. Since its inception by the late “Godfather
of Go-Go” Chuck Brown, the polyrhythmic sound has carried these influences
and evolves them with each generation. Afro-Modernity in the Chocolate City
brings together artists and cultural practitioners with connection to the
Go-Go community and who have researched these connective threads across the
African Diaspora. Afro-Modernity refers to the acts of cultural work by
members of the African Diaspora to maintain traditional cultural
expressions and values amid globalization, migrations, and other challenges
of cultural continuity. Go-Go is a great expression of Afro-Modernity, as
its roots in West Africa and South America have been sustained amid
continued threats of erasure.

Join 2021 Humanitini Curator, Maleke Glee in a moderated discussion with
panelists Akosua Akoto, Shaunté Gates, Diallo Sumbry, and Kweku Sumbry.

This program is free; Registration is required. Registration for this
program ends on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at 12pm.

SUSTAINING THE HUMANITIES THROUGH THE AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN (SHARP)
HumanitiesDC is now accepting applications for the Sustaining the
Humanities through the American Rescue Plan (SHARP) grant program. SHARP
funding will support humanities-based organizations and programs that have
suffered significant economic losses due to COVID.

These grants provide general operating support to non-profit cultural
organizations, working in the public humanities field, that are facing
immediate economic challenges related to the coronavirus pandemic.
Priorities for awarding the funds will be:

   - helping organizations continue their existing or planned public
humanities programs by retaining staff and maintaining their financial
   obligations
   - special projects that increase an organization’s ability to provide
equitable access to its public humanities programs and products during this
   difficult period.

For more information about SHARP funding, please contact Anaia Peddie
<apeddie@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>.

September’s Coffee Chat will feature Bob Yule, who directed the project
From Pandemic to Protest: Black Bartenders in DC.

Shaw Mainstreets and Long Story Short Media applied for a grant in 2020
grant to document and record oral history interviews with contemporary and
former Black bartenders who had worked at bars and restaurants in Shaw .
They aimed to learn how the community has changed and evolved over the
years – especially coinciding with the more recent cocktail and restaurant
renaissance. In March 2020, they found out their proposal was funded – and
then the world changed.

Join us as Yule and a panel of project collaborators and interviewees
discuss the topics and themes that emerged from the oral histories!

The program is free; registration is required. Registration ends at 12 pm
on Friday, September 17, 2021.

ORAL HISTORY COFFEE CHAT
Heurich House Museum – HOME/BREWED Oral History Project
Oral History Coffee Chat
Heurich House Museum – HOME/BREWED Oral History Project
Saturday, October 16
11:00 A.M. - 12:30 P.M.

In 2020, the Heurich House Museum initiated an oral history project to
collect stories with the descendants of Washington brewer, Christian
Heurich and the descendants of those who worked at his brewery. The project
was aimed, in part, at recovering details and stories about what it was
like to work at the brewery, much of this information having been lost in a
fire in the brewery’s archives in 1937. The project also contributed to the
museum’s larger effort to connect it’s own archives and stories to DCs
history as a whole, with an increased focus on labor history and uncovering
historical silences. The project was unusual in that it not only asked oral
history narrators to look back into their own pasts, but also to remember
stories passed down to them by their families and loved ones. Join us as
the project team reveals these rare glimpses of what life was like for
those working at Washington’s largest brewery through the voices of the
project’s narrators.

The program is free; registration is required. Registration ends at 11 a.m.
on Friday, October 15, 2021.

ORAL HISTORY TRAINING WORKSHOP
Oral History Training Workshop
Monday, September 27 and Monday, October 4
6:00 – 9:00 P.M.

This course will introduce DC Oral History Collaborative’s
interviewers—you!—to the best practices of doing oral history, to empower
you with the basic tools for developing your own style and approach to
realizing the Collaborative’s overall aim: preserving DC’s rich past
through oral history interviews with a wide range of its residents.

This course is structured to follow the full cycle of an oral history
interview, from conception to processing. We will discuss practical and
theoretical considerations of doing oral history--including during COVID--
in order to demonstrate the distinctive, interdisciplinary mindset that
oral historians take to their work. Because oral history is best learned
“on the job,” the instructor will ask you to do activities and to discuss
your experiences along the way. The instructor will provide individualized
feedback on these activities that you can use to jumpstart your oral
history work.

The workshop will be facilitated by instructors Anna Kaplan, PhD. and
Maggie Lemere.

The program is free, registration is required. Registration ends Friday,
September 24 at 12 pm.
