Hi Phil,

Side-chaining is a method of controlling some aspect of an audio signal by
using another. It is most typically used to control a compressor in order
to achieve the "ducking" effect. Here's how it works:

Imagine you've got a backing track playing behind a radio DJ.

1 - The backing track is fed into the compressor;

2 - The DJ's voice signal is fed into the side-chain input of the
compressor;

3 - The voice signal is used by the compressor to adjust the threshold level
of the compressor - this gives "ducking".

The sonic result is that, whenever the DJ talks, the compressor kicks in and
reduces (ducks) the level of the backing track, whilst keeping the overall
output level pretty steady.

A very similar effect can be got using side-band gating - the threshold of
the gate is controlled by the side-band signal. The result would be a less
subtle version of the compression-based ducking.

Best wishes.

Anyone on list care to confuse the crap out of me by explaining side chain
to me?

I've been reading the document "supported real time effects" that came with
CT 6. Specifically, I was reading about the Sonitus Gate effect. If you
can explain this in a way that a newby can understand--then you're
good--very good!
