If you have an old system with 4GB and XP Home, what can you upgrade to to
access all 4GB of RAM? I'd like to do that, if I do anything, before I
throw it all away and start from scratch with new hardware. Currently, I
don't really need to upgrade to anything because I haven't outgrown what my
hardware can do. I'm just saying that I'd like to see what using 4GB of RAM
is like, having had it hear for four, plus years, before I throw it out and
start fresh. Is that possible?
Kevin

Yes, this time even ms is suggesting that you don't upgrade to win7 from any
other OS, to always do a clean install. I've always been a fan of complete
formats and reinstall. Specially with something like win7, which has so many
different ways of doing things than xp and even vista did. And especially if
you are going from 32 to 64 bit. If you don't want to buy a new system, you
can stick with xp as long as 4gb of ram is good for you. Actually, a few
days ago I was consulting with someone who wants me to build them a daw
computer, I recommended for them to stick to a 32bit system and 4gb of ram
since all they'll be doing is small radio adds and jingles etc, and they are
on a tight budget. They can't upgrade past xp either, because some of the
programs he uses for other things are not compatible with win7 or xp, and
he's not trying to pay $300 for win7 ultimate just to access the virtual pc
and win xp lol... So I found them a board that can handle 64 bit and upto
16gb, so if they decide to upgrade in the future they can do so with no
problem, but for now he's happy with xp32; stay away from xp64, it sucks big
time, well maybe not as much, but the driver support for it is very lacking,
so that's kind of what makes it sucky...
I know the reconfiguring is not fun and it's very time-consuming, but like
Phil said, reinstall everything on win7, then make an image and back it
up...
Lastly, you can probably build a daw with less than 1000 bucks nowadays
depending on what you need...Just gotta have the know how and the
connections :-)

If I want to upgrade from xp home to w7 64, would i have to do a complete
reformat of my system? i'd really hate to go through that, because i have
way too many programs installed, not to mention many vsts and their sonar
presets. I'm just dreading that kind of time consumption. smile. is there
any way around a complete reformat and having to reinstall everything?

It's not a matter of 64 or 32 bit, jaws11 in general is average with win7.
People have reported driver problems with the video intercept, some of which
i've personally experienced. i've also experienced random crashes on various
machine configurations, both 32 and 64, using jaws11 and win7. This didn't
occur in jaws10, and jaws11 does sem to get stuck in certain areas of the
windows UI sometimes and requires a restart and/or a screen refresh to work
properly. This again is on various machines, not isolated to 1 single
machine. In terms of scripts, jaws11 is better, it actually reads the list
views and the selections, though be it a little buggy sometimes, it does
support the system tray function, the start menu and the new calculator
amongst other things. But the program itself seems a bit buggy to me on
every day use... If you can deal with those minimal issues, you should be
ok. I must say however that the research it feature is very handy to quickly
lookup stuff...

djx,

how would you actually rate jaws 11 with windows 7 64-bit? does it work very
well, or just average?

Yes jaws64 works under win7, jaws10 has somewhat limited support, while
jaws11 has better support, though it's kind of buggy... If you were to use
jaws under windows 7 I'd recommend jaws11, that goes for 32 or 64
platforms...

Hi erik!
as far as I know, jaws is now in both 32 and 64 bit for windows 7, well, I
haven't tried it out yet, but I sure will do when I get money for purchasing
windows 7.
I'm running sonar 8.5 on an XP machine, and it's working great.
Oh, by the way. Welcom to the list, I'm Jörgen Hansson, from sweden as well.
Hope you'll have a good time with us on this wonderful list.
