I went with an Audiophile USB--didn't know it was usb ver 1. Didn't even think to check that it was usb2. Oh well, my needs for now are quite simple and it should do ok

Phil:
Everybody has their own oppinions when it comes to sound cards. The interface you select will depend on how demanding your projects are going to be. The audiophile usb is a quick and simple solution, but it is usb1 and you ultimately may not be satisfied with its performance when running it at low latency with complex projects with a lot of plug-ins. If you just plan to do fairly simple work with your laptop, it will do fine. If you plan to treat your laptop like a desktop daw, you should seriously consider a firewire interface. I did test an fa66 and liked it. If you really want to go high-end, Mark of the unicorn is your best bet, such as the 828 or 896. I've had an 828 for years and have recorded 16 tracks of audio simultaneously on a laptop that was not nearly as good as the adk's we have now. I also have a behrenger interface here that is usb2, has good mic preamps, and has hardly ever been used that I would be happy to sell. I think it is a model bca2000 or something like that.

Hi Sandy,

Is there a specific reason why it isn't recommended by ADK? And, what firewire controller are you using to connect the FA66? Are you using the single builtin firewire port, or an express card/cardbus firewire controller? I'm thinking about going with the audiophile USB, for no particular reason other than cost, ease of installation and use(which come to think of it are fairly particular reasons).

BTW: I'm ripping out the ACronis backup software that shipped with the laptop--its about as friendly as a dead carp.

I am using the Edirol FA66 as a firewire audio interface. ADK tested it to make sure everything was compatible. According to what Mary Pat said, ADK does NOT recommend this interface. I ordered it from Digitraxx and had them ship it to ADK. Normally, Digitraxx won't do this if you are buying with a standard credit card. Usually, they only ship to your billing address.

Phil, I realize you already have your laptop, and that you will be installing the audio interface yourself. This info is for people who might want to take the same route I did.

Well, the ADK laptop finally arrived. I have set it up as best as I know how(for now), and networked it with my older laptop via a linksys router. To those new owners of these machines I would like to ask a few questions:

1 What, if any, of the preloaded software have you cleared out of the system and what have you kept? I'm talking about the system startup items.

2) I assume that if I don't use the ADK for web browsing, or use email then I am safe as can be expected. Am I right on this? I have antivirus and spyware protection on it now. It is connected to the web via my network, and can access the web for registrations and update downloads etc, but I expect that not using Internet Explorer or outlook will be sufficient to stay clear of most problems.

3) I'll be needing another soundcard as the echo indigo is a physical mismatch as far as blocking other plugs etc when installed. I'll be going with a USB soundcard most likely and wonder if there are any suggestions.

finally, forgive my scattered email--I've been working on these two machines for hours and I'm getting a little squirrely. Any "heads up" for this machine will be greatly appreciated.

I must say though, It is a great looking and responsive machine. And, of course, I had to re-authorize jaws twice so far because of the Tranzport and God knows what else.
