I used to ask Ann to go for dinner once in a while, because she seemed to have few friends. But it wasn't a nice release like I would get with said Susan Jones and some of the other reporters when we would go for coffee or a drink and just have a no- holds- barred bitching session.
I am in touch with Susan on Facebook and still doing the Christmas card thing. Also Bev Betkowski, and a rare exchange with Will Gibson (but they may have been gone before you came. I can't remember.)
By the way I didn't get many cards this year. About 15 I think.
Susan was someone I often disagreed with but still could be friends. She is a salt of the earth kind of person. She and her husband did a trip across Canada and another multi-state trip to the US. (Remember those days people, when we could travel anywhere any time we liked). But I missed her. I was in Norway when they came through New Brunswick.
Apologies everyone if we seem to be having a bit of a personal trip down memory lane here. But fill free to write in your personal stuff. I love eavesdropping.
Sorry I don't post often. But I am impressed with how many of you seem very close even if you ave never met in person. Somehow I haven't gotten there.
I also have trouble with Zoom. Meetings are much less appealing to me when we are not in person and I can't look around the room and see if my jokes are going over. When everyone is muted and there is no response it pretty much kills the comedian in me.

Glenna, I knew it wasn't a burn ... I'd worked with Ann for the first week or so, remember? LOL. I recall being relieved once I got the desk to myself. (It was the same at my current job, too, even though I liked the lady who was showing me the ropes. I am a friggin hermit.)
Old journals are enlightening though. I find myself shocked at the things I have totally forgotten. Sometimes in a nice way, sometimes not so much.
Do you keep in touch with Susan Jones? I loved her.

Hi Kate, and Happy 2021 to everyone.
Wow Kate. I can clearly see Ann (or was it Anne, proofreader?) standing down there in her corner of the newsroom (which became your corner) and , yep, hand on the hip, complaining about something.
Not knowing the "Ann" Kate speaks of, Scott, that comment of mine may sound like an insult. But quite the opposite. It was clearly a compliment for Kate.
Ann worked at that newspaper as proofreader for several years and I don't know if I ever saw her smile. She was always complaining about the job, the reporters, the editor, right up and down the line. She used to complain to me about the way I walked across the newsroom. Apparently I scuffed me feet. (That might have had something to do with frequently putting in 14 hour-work days - with no overtime pay.) She was an unhappy woman. She even refused to go to her son's wedding because he married a "foreigner". I think she was Italian.
Kate you were cool. (and still are). Total opposite personality from Ann.
I think Ann would be 86 or 87 now. Wonder if she is still alive?
I am really bad about keeping in touch with people after I move away. A terrible person. If it wasn't for Facebook I wouldn't be in touch with any of the friends and co-workers from Alberta.
I have moved around quite a bit and after I leave a place I may send a Christmas card to a few friends in the first year, fewer the next and then, none.
I know some of you have moved a lot. I was commenting to someone once about how a lot of Americans are moving all the time. I got a raised eyebrow in response.
I have lived in five Canadian provinces, nine cities and small towns. And, after all that, ended up in my home province and about an hour's drive from the town where I was born.
Hard to keep track of people from that many places. Some people are better at it.

I'm reading through a journal written in June 2000 when I was proofreader at the St. Albert Gazette.

"Last week I said to the reporters present, whose desks are in the newsroom with mine, that occasionally I have sat at my computer with my left hand on my hip and when that happens I feel like Ann, the previous proofreader, because I'd seen her do it. 'It's like the spirit of Ann is still in this corner!" I said.

"Ha!" Glenna laughed. "You will never be an Ann!"
