There is no need to protect your pokemon indeed!! The summons in this game
take reduced damage... they can tank really well for u in fact!! The Topaz
carbuncle is a tank summons and his hp and defense go through the roof!!

To level up keep doing dungeons until your lv20-22. Then you can start
farming fates! Also levequests are really good for tradecraft! Hand in high
quality items for 200% boost to exp n gil! Some levequests (those that
require you to hand in 3 items are repeatable up to a max of 3x). So and
example: you can do a basic levequest which gives 5000 exp if you hand in
hq items = 15 000 exp x 3 = 45 000 exp per leve allowance!!

Guard your allowances- only get 3 allowances every 12 hours (unless you
started in closed beta where i started with 50 allowances- i had 97 at one
stage!!).

My arcanist, summoner and scholar are on level 45 (they share exp bcoz the
base job is the same- arcanist). Thaumaturge is lv 21, conjurer lv 19,
weaver lv 35, goldsmith lv 15 and miner lv 11.
