For a second, I saw the new models and thought to myself, "This actually
looks quite good". Chun in particular looks baws. Reminds me of SF2/3S
Chun, not 'stupidly happy and friendly' Chun. She looks like she means
business. She looks like she wants to fight and she's taking it seriously.
Then I saw the actual gameplay stuff and the hype levels died immediately.
Something just seems really off about the way everything looks and is
animated. It isn't too far removed from SF4 - at least at this stage - and
that bothers me. Well, still early days I suppose. SF4 wasn't any different
during the development phase (although I hated the Ryu and Ken models back
then and still do even now. At least, IMO, this is a visual step in the
right direction).
It seems as though Capcom is trying to take the series back to it's roots,
at least aesthetically-speaking. No goofy, comic expressions. Ryu and Chun
Li look serious and focused (and surprisingly, Ryu doesn't look like an
ape). Whether the rest of the game will be a return to form remains to be
seen, and that's all I really care about at this stage.
It's difficult for me to get hype about this kind of stuff considering
Capcom's track record. Time will tell, but I'm cautiously optimistic at the
moment.
