Interesting thread.
As the owner of a large layout and 18 members, I found that there is more
than enought locomotives and varity to operate. I found I had thirty some
locomotives to convert toDCC, expensive and time consuming to do. My
solution was to pick out ten locomotives I liked running and sold the rest.
In spite of the consisting you can do with DCC I found I usually run only
one locomotive at a time. I guess I'm an operator and not a collector.
My two cents.

Don't think about the expense of converting 30 locomotives all at once. Do
it on the installment plan (like paying taxes). Start off with one or two
units, your favourites, then as time and funds permit, and your expertise
in decoder installation goes, add one or two at a time. You may want to
add sound into some of the steamers too. It adds a whole new dimension,
although it's not for everyone.
