Besides the magnet and vacuum cleaner and panty hose trick, I use either a
photo flood or one of those super beam lights used to read street signs at
night from your car to illuminate the vicinity of the lost screw.
These illuminate the area about five times brighter than the overhead shop
lights in my basement. I keep a portable car battery jumper for these lights
and car vacs.
Clean up the work area and vacuum the floor in a wide area where you will
work helps find tiny screws and parts. This is great advice, which I
frequently forget before doing a project or am in too great a rush to prepare
in
advance.
It's comforting to know we are not alone in losing things as big as pad
locks in a matter of seconds. I have misplaced things as big as shop vacs.
