Rob,
From all my visits to BC (about 8) by train and car in which I chased,
photographed and videoed trains I came to the same conclusion you  did.
SD40s having the multi mark are an orange-red(the same color as my 95 Camaro),
Called Action Red - very orange. Sometimes weathered to a pink.

red( from the SOO LINE).
Called SOO Line Candy Apple Red. Very Red.

I don't recall any locos that bore the multi mark wearing the SOO red.
The SOO Line red was used after the multi mark was discontinued.
You should see them on the CP Rail Systems units, and later.

I use "cool  white" fluorescent lamps over my layout.
Which is going to colour shift the paint colours on your models.
You will have to experiment to find something that looks good under your lights or perhaps someone on the list can supply the information you need.
