Switching is not done by colour coding but by car number. A switch crew might
know, for instance, that cars of certain colours would not contain perishables
and some cars definitely were intended for perishibles by looking at the
colour, but they would still be governed solely by the numbers on the cars and
on the switch list.

Multimark or not - colour-coded cars must have make switching far easier
when assembling specific train types. Eg. Perishables etc.
Personally I like the multi-mark, it's a very visible symbol, and if the
idea was to put it at the Brake wheel end of the car, of which I'm not
certain, but if this was so, then it would also be a useful tool for
shunters (or whatever you call them!).
As models vary so much as to how and where - and even which way the
multi-mark faces, it's hard to know what is correct (and photos only
ever show one side of the car!!)
Perhaps someone can enlighten me.
Shame that most models released with this era of livery are only in N
Scale!
