As for a photo, I cannot help you. I saw them on a regular basis but never
photographed one. If you saw the photo posted or linked to here on Wednesday
which showed an F with the icicle breaker on the roof you will get an idea
what they looked like and it is obvious as to how they worked. Hit an
icicle, break it off. Very simple, low maintenance, no moving parts. The
cars they were mounted on were older cars, not as high as the newer ones or
the locomotives, so the rigging was taller to bring it up to the proper
height. I am sure someone will post a photo or a link to a photo.

Being below the snow line (Texas!) this is an odd concept for me. :)
How did these work, why, and are there any photos of these cars?
Any information would be helpful, as I am considering modeling the CP.
