Hi Jeff,

We use the “prohibit change” function to lock copies of all returns that are
filed (as opposed to drafts used for projections, estimates or training). I
know that we have different rules for who can lock returns (most users) vs. who
can unlock them (return signers and certain admins). FYI - the person who locks
the return always has the ability to unlock it, even if they otherwise don’t
have unlock rights. This has caused a handful of issues where people we thought
couldn’t unlock returns were able to.

We also had a lot of issues early on because the “prohibit change” box doesn’t
always actually register that it’s been clicked and lock the return. When
signers were locking the returns, some of them were closing out or moving to
another screen too quickly so that the returns they thought they had locked
weren’t actually locked.

I’m not sure that either of these issues fits your fact pattern, but thought
they were worth mentioning, as they’ve caused us problems over the years.

Preach. Same issues over here. While we’re on the topic of CCH Axcess Issues..
:)

Do any of your firms monitor / use the “Prohibit Change” option in CCH Axcess
Tax > Return Manager to lock returns / set them as read-only? We use this for
prior year returns, and they are locked by our admin staff.

We have restricted this using the Axcess Security Groups, but we keep coming
across instances where some returns magically “Unlock” themselves while they
are being viewed. When we look through the return history, it shows that a user
who does NOT have access to perform this action was the one who removed the
“Prohibit Change” option to “Unlock” the return. I have opened several tickets
about this, and their support can’t figure it out.. It’s maddening. Anyone else
or am I just lucky?

Same with Engagement support issues here, it also has chronic issues. The
majority of our issues are CCH software also. The software seems like an
ancient/legacy platform, and CCH Axcess Engagement, their cloud replacement
doesn’t inspire confidence either due to the known issues with that product
that was in beta forever and seems to be in a soft rollout stage as the
existing production users seem more like beta testers still. I felt the same
way when we moved to the full CCH Axcess suite in 2018, like beta testers. I
will say CCH Axcess has slowly improved over time, the problem is to fix
problems or make significant improvements seems to be on a geologic/glacial
timescale….they are not nimble in their software development.

We are right there with you. I’d say with pretty good confidence that 75% of
the tickets that we get are about CCH. Not just with Axcess for us but also for
engagement. There are times that one person might have severe issues with
engagement and I’ll have to spend a significant amount of time trying to fix
it. Uninstall/reinstall has almost become the normal reboot. It’s incredibly
exhausting and more often than naught, CCH is not really any help. I try to
avoid calling their support because I personally feel it’s a waste of time. And
like you said, switching away from Axcess isn’t exactly easy in multiple
aspects.

Really tired of the CCH Axcess ‘IT overhead’ which is unlike anything I’ve ever
seen in my career with a vendor. Every update there is a significant percentage
of people that require manual intervention to uninstall/reinstall CCH Axcess,
and they are essentially dead in the water and can’t work so you have to drop
whatever you’re doing and prioritize those. As the Firm scales up the problem
just gets bigger and requires more IT resources. They have another CCH Axcess
update scheduled for this weekend to address some issues from the last update,
so we have back to back updates 2 weeks in a row. Fortunately, it’s just the
'CCH Axcess Common' component instead of all of them, so hopefully this one
won’t be so bad. Their software development/QA/QC/testing is substandard IMO. I
understand these are complex systems with a lot of moving parts, but we’re also
paying a lot of money to deal with a lot of overhead. The older I get, the less
tolerance I have for mediocrity.

There are other frustrations here with Axcess from users/operations/partners
and we’re likely to drop Axcess entirely and move in another direction when our
contract expires in 1 year, but I don’t relish the idea of another data
migration, which we all know is a massive undertaking and there is always
fallout from those migrations.

ago and then typically let the applications / users update themselves when new
releases are available.

Subject: [CPAGeeks] CCH Axcess Install

Has anyone else noticed CCH Axcess Tax and DataScan won’t install from the CCH
Install and Update Manager? Gets to like 30% and stays there. If you uncheck
Tax and DataScan everything else installs fine. I’ve been using the silent
installers for Tax/DataScan, but curious if anyone else is seeing this..been
going on for a few months now
