I'm reading a book on Frederick Douglass "Prophet of Freedom by
David W. Blight - it's a fascinating book on this ex slave who became
such a strong voice for the slaves and their freedom.
I was interested to read in this book that there was the thought that
some of the ex slaves would emigrate to Haiti. And in fact it states
that : "twelve Rochester
African American families followed their Baptist Minister in moving to
Haiti". This appears to be
around the year of 1861.
And it seems that "at the invitation and largesse of the Haitian
consulate in Philadelphia Douglass was invited to visit the island
nation" (Haiti). There is no
further information that he actually came. WOW they had US Consuls in
Haiti that early!!
There are other statements about Douglass' mission to Haiti also.
But I wanted to know from the list members, if any of you have any
information about these people who came from Rochester - this would have
been around the year of 1861? It would be
interesting to know their names and then we could trace them in Haiti.
It's a fascinating history of this great man - but a very long book --
over 700 pages!!
