Dear Corbetters,
Whatever has happened to this group? Haiti, the country, is crumbling
in front of us, and the only recent postings are by group members
gushing about some lines of Haiti-related poetry! OK, not quite true,
Leiderman posts a depressing account of a missionary family's troubles
and decision to return to Canada ship, and Jacqui asks a historical
question about 19th century Haitian immigrants from Rochester.
No one seems to have noticed the Haitian Senate delegation that visited
Rep Andy Levin (D-MI) 's office a couple weeks ago and (briefly)
convinced the good Congressman to support their call for "maintaining
mobilization" efforts against Haitians and Americans residing in Haiti.
That would have been Haitian Senators Evaliere "Lwil" Beauplan and
Nenel Cassy, who were accompanied by the owner of Radio Zenith,
reportedly closed by Conatel for inciting violence, and a former
Senator, Simon Desras. The depressingly divided picture of Haiti they
create seems to confirm the view of economist Etzer Emile that "Haiti
has Chosen to Become a Poor Country".
In the 40 years I have been involved with Haiti, the job of running this
place has proven too heavy a lift for every single Haitian leader. It
is pretty easy to lose hope with the recent exodus of talented Haitians
who have chosen to leave and will likely not return. Those who have
not already fled the country are building higher walls around their
homes and business and installing ever more "fer forgé". Haiti
remains a prime exhibit of why good government matters.
But, hey Corbetters, let's not abandon hope, so to leave you on a more

Really, no reason why Apple's CEO Tim Cook shouldn't have accepted my
offer to come down for an exploratory visit!
