You can turn it off in BIOS to make it not function but Windows still ses
the graphics chip and loads it, which means going (as you did) to disable
this device.

I did that right off (in the BIOS) when I installed the new video card,
but the GV Intel Graphics Controller was still showing in the device
manager, so I double clicked that and went into the properties and told it
"Do not use this device (disable)" and then rebooted and all worked well.

It's always the little things, eh!

Methinks you'll have to disable the onboard graphics in the BIOS, or is
that what you meant ?

ROFLMAO! I was really tempted to do that at one point!!

I finally figured out the problem... sorta. In the device manager it was
showing the new video card and the old onboard graphics stuff. I disabled
the old one, rebooted, and the task bar was there. The old one now has a
red X next to it.. but I'm not gonna stress over that right now. Tyler is
reinstalling his game, we'll see what happens from there.

What a PITA it's been and this all started *before* I had my first cuppa
coffee in me this morning. Maybe that was the problem.. do nothing until
first pot is consumed!

Thanks for the link, couldn't find what I needed there, but I'm keeping
the link to the main site for future reference.

Got a problem with a fairly new computer. Got it last Christmas for
hubby, but it's barely been used. Tyler wanted to install Flight Simulator 3
and the install went well but said video card wasn't compatible. It was
onboard video and sound. So I put a new video card (NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420)
and sound card in it, and over-rode the onboard for those devices. All
worked fine. Everything picked up nicely and shows in the device manager as
working correctly.

Next, the game came up and the first error message was gone and replaced
with, "CFS3 Configuration Override file outdated", so I bounced over here to
my computer (only computer that has internet connection) went to Google and
got to this site
  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;331562 followed
that to here, http://www.microsoft.com/games/combatfs3/downloads.asp
downloaded the new direct x.. etc., put it on disk, but before I put it on
the other computer I noticed that the task bar wasn't coming up (on other
computer). Can't activate it with the mouse or with the windows key.
Rebooted. Nada. Uninstalled CS3. Rebooted. Nada.. no task bar. I was able
to get to the properties and it shows that the taskbar *should* be showing.
But.. it's not.

Any idea? I have uninstalled the game and I have not put the updated
stuff that I got from the above site (and put on disk) on to the computer
yet.

Below is the specs on the computer I'm having problems with. (Please no
slams as to the brand, or the CPU unless it's pertinent to the problem.
It's a computer that is used by someone [or not used as the case may be]
that doesn't know much about computers, nor does he need a high end
computer.)
