My wife hates comics and art, so I’ve started the process of thinning things
down because I’m seven years older than her and I don’t want her to have to
deal with all this stuff when I’m gone. In March, before the pandemic hit us
hard here in WV, I sold all 84 long boxes of my comics to a local dealer for
cheap (and took a huge loss) just to get rid of everything. It felt great
seeing them go and was just the break I needed away from that aspect of
collecting.
I have around 200 short boxes of trade paperbacks and hardcovers in a room in
my house that I’m slowly selling. It’s taking years to thin that down.
And then there’s the art. I have a safe full and art on the walls and she won’t
have any idea what to do with it all, so I hope to sell that all eventually.
I don’t have kids, so I hope we can reap some profits from my lifetime of
collecting as we get older to help us enjoy our twilight years a little more.
I’m only 48, so I hope that’s way on down the road.
I was, however, born to Depression-era parents who taught me to save everything
(and in good condition, too!) in case I need it or need to sell it later. That
put the collecting burden on me when they bought me my first comic book and
then my first Star Wars doll (action figure).
I have a lot of art contacts typed onto a document for my wife, but I’m sure
she won’t really know what to do with all this stuff after I’m gone.
What I have said for nearly 30 years is that we are all just caretakers for a
little while of these really cool things and then we need to let others enjoys
them.

My kids have all the fine art in the house parceled our already. They will
probably keep a half dozen comic pieces each. They like comics and manga but
don’t appreciate the art. I do plan on donating a good portion of my
collection to several comic art museums including billy Ireland, angouleme
and Milan. I’d leave a bit of a legacy. Other art can be turned back into
cash but I don’t believe I need to leave my kids a large inheritance. They
have been given skills, love, support and opportunity and now they need to
find their own way. If that way includes some comic art on their walls so
much the better. I will probably sell art off over the years as well but the
end game isn’t finalized.
