Another aspect of having a functioning team is that often the coaches
[or financial professionals] are told things that are not deemed
relevant by the clients for the other two professions to hear.
Coaches are a great source of ideas based on what they know of the
clients from this different perspective. This is another reason why
lawyers need to continue their shift from thinking they are the best
source of ideas and analysis and to respect their collaborative
colleagues as equal participants in the process.

We have had a few very successful "six way" meetings (even one seven way with
the financial person). The role of the coach is, as you suggest, one of
support and, when the situation requires it, one of guiding the participants
through difficult emotional moments. The coaches also can offer ideas of
compromise based on their knowledge of each partner, when the
attorneys are unable to achieve this in the meeting. I guess I see
the role of the coach as an active facilitator of the process.
