It is the same in NJ. We cannot hold ourselves out as specialists unless we
have received a certification from the powers that be subsequent to an
examination. I too find it an inappropriate label for what we do. I find
collaboration to be the development of a craft or an art where a test cannot
predict success for a couple or a family. The role of the team members is
interdependent and the outcome is a result of many factors. I suggest we
continue to seek more and more opportunities to learn from our team members
and colleagues to deepen our skills and open our eyes to as many options as
possible.

Dave Murch - agree with your entire reply, but insert Ontario as the
jurisdiction. The Law Society does itself award specialist certifications,
upon proving level of competence and meeting training requirements, and
paying a fee. But otherwise a lawyer cannot hold oneself out as an expert,
just clarify one does or does not practice in a particular area of law.
And I agree with others' comments - I learn something with every file. When
I stop, or no longer wish to, I will retire.
