Dave Murch - agree with your entire reply, but insert Ontario as the
jurisdiction. The Law Society does itself award specialist certifications, upon
proving level of competence and meeting training requirements, and paying a
fee. But otherwise a lawyer cannot hold oneself out as an expert, just clarify
one does or does not practice in a particular area of law.
And I agree with others' comments - I learn something with every file. When I
stop, or no longer wish to, I will retire.
