In Ontario, Canada at the start of 2002, we had 7 active practice groups with
about 150 trained lawyers. We now have 14 groups with about 350 active
practitioners. About half that number again have received some training
although they may not be actively practising and numerous mental
health/financial planning personnel are also trained. More Ontario groups are
starting to come together all the time.
I spoke today to a woman from Montreal, Quebec and they have a group of about
35 members which formed a few months ago. So far it is the only one in the
province but they expect that once there are some French speaking trainers
available, there will be rapid growth.
There is one active group of about 25 in the Halifax area of Nova Scotia and a
group of about 8 members forming in the province of Prince Edward Island (pop.
138,000).
As of Nov. 21 there was one practitioner from the territory of Nunavut in the
far northeast of Canda - I know, she can't collaborate with herself but she
does work for the Attorney General's office so I am hopeful that the government
of Nunavut may take the initiative in establishing the collaborative
alternative there. That would really be an interesting challenge given the
remoteness and the vastness of the territory - collaborative law may take on a
whole new dimension in terms of its application in the face of those geographic
realities.
I'm interested in the growth other areas are experiencing.

Subject: Re: [CollabLaw] Re: Application for Louis M. Brown Award
Hello National listserve members:
I have been invited by Will Hornsby of the ABA to submit an nomination for
the ABA Louis M. Brown Award for Legal Access on behalf of Collaborative Law.
I need to have the application submitted by Thursday afternoon.
Have any of you generated any figures for the total number of collaborative
law groups that exist nationally and in Canada?
My sense is that internationally the concept is exploding so quickly it is a
little like trying to give the size of a super nova. The best we can say is
that it is increasing at an increasing rate.
The application description needs to be held to 200 words or less, so our
main task will be to speak succinctly. A daunting undertaking for any
attorney.
Take Care.
