At the meeting last week I undertook to check to see if
The Orbit 20 Reader would work with NVDA using Bluetooth. In summary, yes, it
does work perfectly.
There is a bit of a story in the effort to find this answer. I found the
following points are necessary to ensure success:
1. Set the Orbit so that the Bluetooth option is "Auto" (this is the default)
2. Set the Orbit so that the pairing option is "Just Works" (this is the
default)
3. Enable Bluetooth on the PC and pair with the Orbit 20 reader
4. Ensure that Bluetooth is active on the PC
5. Ensure that Bluetooth is turned off in all other devices paired with the
Orbit 20 Reader; (see explanation below)
6. Turn on the Orbit 20 reader
7. Restart NVDA
8. The text spoken by NVDA appears in the Orbit 20 Reader in grade 1 braille.
I experienced great difficulty getting the Orbit to display the NVDA output
until I realised that I had Bluetooth On in my iPhone and this grabbed the
Orbit, preventing the link from the PC from being effective. When I turned off
the Bluetooth engine in the iPhone, NVDA appeared on the Orbit display
immediately after restarting NVDA.
NVDA is configured to connect immediately with its default Braille settings as
long as the Orbit is in Auto mode.
Interestingly, I found that the Orbit goes into edit mode if the PC is editing.
When I turned on the Orbit to write this email, I was immediately able to type
these words and backspace, delete and retype using the Orbit alone!
Another curious feature occurs when I am connected to the PC and NVDA and
decide to turn off the Orbit using its power buttons, so that it is not just in
sleep mode. When I turn the Orbit back on it ignores the PC and NVDA and wakes
up the iPhone, turning on the Bluetooth setting if it is off on the iPhone! To
get the Orbit back to the PC and NVDA, I need to turn off the Bluetooth setting
on the iPhone, touch nothing on either the iPhone or the Orbit, restart NVDA
and then the Orbit responds to NVDA, ignoring the iPhone! It is like a battle
between the iPhone and the PC!
