John,

I installed libtool and I think it worked. The tools were built. Where is
the liblouis.so file supposed to be? I can't find it. Maybe it didn't build
right.

See if you can install libtool . I'm not as familiar with gnu autotools 
as perhaps I should be, but this is installed on my machine.
