Wouldn't 1950 be M C X L? The M before the L puzzles me.

Subject: [bookshare-discuss] copywrite year in roman numerals

HI,
I recently scanned The Enduring Hills by Janice Holt Giles. This is an older
book I found in my Grandma's things. As I read through the book I found that
the copyright year was expressed in Roman numerals and have no idea what
year they represent! The Roman numerals are m c m l. Does anyone know what
numbers they represent? Thanks. Mary
