Thanks to everyone getting back to me and I appreciate Gerald Hova's
offer to assist me. I find the letter from Peter quite disturbing, yet, at
the same time, not all that surprising. I have done some additional
investigating and have a pretty good idea what has occurred. It is a sad
reflection of the state of the blindness industry that good people are being
either terminated or forced to resign because of a fundamental lack of
grasping the nature of this particular segment of the population because of
some aspects of the management model being pulled in from the mainstream.
The reality is simply that not all Mainstream business philosophies work
here, and it is a trend that I fear is going to have some rather negative
ramifications to us in the long run. Peter is jus another example of this
alarming trend, which I never expected Bookshare to exhibit

I just hope that Jim comes to his senses and realizes that someone who
has been loyal and a valuable asset has been forced to step aside because of
plain old, disgusting politics and an overall lack of comprehension of this
market/industry. His loss will be felt. There is no doubt of that

Thanks again, Gerald, but in his usual professional and knowledgeable
manner, Peter kindly answered my question on his own time. I just hope that
someone with half of his technical ability is available at
Bookshare............

Take Care

Dear John,

Your queery makes me sad all over again. Peter isn't associated with
Bookshare anymore. You are right that he's an extremely reliable, helpful
person. I hope this change leads him to a situation where he's happy and his
talents are put to good use.

Below my signature is the letter he wrote to the Bookshare lists explaining
his decision.

Always with love,

Lissi
Hey all,
I thought I'd stick in my two cents before the
spin machine takes over. After a 15 year
association with Benetech and Arkenstone before it,
I have resigned my position as Technical Projects
Associate with the Benetech Initiative. The lack of
sponsorship to go to CSUN was just one symptom in an
increasingly hostile and counter-productive
relationship I've had with the current senior
management of Bookshare. While the immediate
reaction from management was to turn off all access
to my account, even my access to read books, I still
believe it to be a fundamentally terrific service
and one worth supporting. I believe it is current
management's misunderstanding of me as a person
which, undoubtedly, led to the inference that I
would use my knowledge of the web site's underlying
code to do damage to its content or its user
records. As I've indicated, I have total support
for Bookshare and the rest of Jim Fruchterman's
visions. I hope that he will one day be able to
find senior management worthy of them.
This does not mean you won't be seeing me at
conferences such as CSUN, NFB, etc. My associations
in the world of Accessible Technology are
long-standing and still of great interest to me.
Thanks.
