As an experiment, I have changed batteries serial times just to see if there
is something wrong with bp while using d+e+f. My experiments revealed that
if I hit the "d" key and hold it down and then hit the "e" and hold it down
before hitting the "f" key, I don't have any problems. Thirty seconds is
actually a long time and you don't have to rush. Just make sure the
positive end goes where it's supposed to.

And bear in mind that the time and date are among the settings that are
saved, so don't press D+E+F until you are sitting there with the fresh
batteries in hand, ready to install them. This way, you'll only lose ten or
twenty seconds on the clock. I once forgot this and the BP picked up a
two-week-old set of settings and I wondered why it was telling me that it
was 2:30 in the morning when I knew it was really around noon! <g>

That saves all the settings so that you'll have them when you put the new
batteries in.
