It is true that hardware is less and less expensive. However, this is
also true. Major companies produce products that are not expected to be
on the market for all that long. The average life of a cell phone (not
how long it will last, but how long it will be marketed) is anywhere
from 12 to 18 months. The companies that manufacture such devices have
billions of dollars in resources to spend, and when they change
hardware, it is not going to be all that costly. APH first introduced
the Bookport in 2003. There is going to be a new model eventually.
However, what kind of market does APH sell to? It is a relatively small
one. Therefore, simply because APH can never get the kind of volume
pricing that a major company can, the hardware improvements will cost
more than they would if millions of Bookports were sold.
I would like to see some of the improvements being discussed here. USB
charging functionality would be great! Support for SD cards would be
fine. I also like the idea of an optional additional synthesizer. I
don't care about play lists, d do I care much about the order in which
files get loaded on the Bookport. I know how to insure that they are in
the order I want.

Walt, your reply has covered most points. Cris, as Walt pointed out,
price
is a real consideration. You may have several 4 gig cards. However,
there
are many people on this list who need to budget for any additional card.
If
the type of card was changed, the current cards would become obsolete. I

attended a meeting where NLS stated that they were planning to use
compact
flash for there digital system. I doubt that these cards are going to
become
unavailable. I would like to see an option for buying a different
synthesizer. Eloquence, for example, would cost $50 extra. If it were an

option, the synthesizer wouldn't increase the price for people who are
happy
with DoubleTalk. As for music, I didn't buy the unit for music and that
still isn't a real consideration for me. The BookPort was introduced as
a
reading device. All of the additions have made it possible to read many
different formats and play MP3 or digital talking books. I would like to
see
it accommodate WMA since that is the format used by the unabridged
library.

Make it a great one
