Why couldn't a passworded activation system be set up for *.lit files just
as Bookport transfer does with Audible activation? Both are proprietary
formats.
Even if you can gain access to the text contained in a PDF file, it probably
wouldn't be of much use. The manuals that I have attempted to read in PDF
have only small bits of text that only make sense if you could see the
pictures around them. But for what it's worth, dig into Adobe Reader and
extract the text, just as is done with Word for Word and rtf files.
