Neil, this isn't what he is talking about.
Perhaps the word wrong here is a bit misleading. I am not trying to say that the book port works any differently than it did when I first got it. All I and others are trying to say is that it is not a true lock and and if the button keeps getting pressed in some kind of case, it will drain battery power. Granted, it is perhaps as good as it can be and it does prevent the book port from doing other things which might occur when other keys might be pressed if there were no lock, but it still is not a perfect lock. For example, my mini disk recorders have a lock and when you slide the lock switch into the lock position, pressing the keys do nothing at all. You know the unit is locked because the slide switch is in the locked position. Unfortunately, if you use a button press on the book port to lock the unit, you will never know if it is locked unless you either hear a beep or put on headphones to see what, if anything is being read. Perhaps a slide switch or power switch would be better if this could be arranged.

Exactly. That is why there is nothing wrong with it.

Yes, it has to wake up to do the locked beep.

The BookPort has always worked this way. When it's locked and a key is pressed, it wakes up and then goes back to sleep in ten seconds. Mine did this in July of 2003, and it still does. I don't think there's anything wrong, it's just the way it works.

Which is my point. The buttons beep regardless of whether Lock Beep is set on or off, so I don't think it's working correctly, is it?

Walt, Sorry if I am repeating things you know, but I don't remember the first part of this thread. as I understand it, when lock is turned on and you press a key, the book port wakes up. The beep afterwards is the book port going back to sleep just as it would when you finished reading. So, the bottom line is that if the unit is in some kind of case which keeps on pressing keys, the book port will continue to turn itself off and on. I guess this is a bit better than having it begin to read and never stop until the 2 key happens to be pressed again. By the way, mine has done this since I first purchased it.

Subject: [bookport] Lock Beep doesn't seem to be working
This has been the situation for so long that I honestly can no longer remember when it worked right, but there is no difference in performance of my BP whether I have Lock Beep turned off or on. In either case, when the unit is locked and I press a key, it beeps after several seconds. I guess it's one of those things that I simply never took conscious notice of and as a result, I honestly can't say when this behavior may have started, but it's been a long, long time.
