Just for interest sake. I solved my card problem. It dawned on me that
perhaps when one inserts a card with a different capacity in the PM one
should reset PM so that it can "see" the new card. That was just it. After a
warm reset PM accepted the card.

You mentioned having difficulty reading a card in the PAC Mate.
Perhaps the clue here is that you formatted with an XP format. I believe
the PAC Mate can deal with FAT or FAT32, but not the newer format XP
uses--whose initials have suddenly slipped my mind.
