As Richard mentioned, the unit is preventing you from updating for your
own protection.  What you should probably do in a case like this is
continue using the older firmware until your current batteries are
depleted.  Then, once you replace the old ones with a fresh set of
batteries, perform the update.

I noticed that when I am about to update to the new beta, that if I
have
around 30% on my battery gauge, that I get a low battery message and
the
upgrade aborts.  Normally the low battery error hasn't occurred yet at
that
level.  Can somebody tell me why those levels were chosen?  Seems like
quite
a bit of battery life thrown away.
